The Greene County Area EMS Association will again sponsor a fall hybrid EMT class to be conducted by the Mercy College of Health Sciences – Des Moines.
A hybrid EMT class is one in which the lecture portions of the class are presented over the internet using an interactive program. The lecture portion of this class will be held on Tuesday evenings at 6 pm beginning Sept. 1. Students may take the class in the comfort of their homes if desired. Past students have met in groups and have participated in the classes from their various EMS and fire departments. Each lecture session is recorded and students may review each class as desired.
Six “live” Saturday “skills days” are included in the class. Previous classes met from 8:30 am to 4:30 pm on skills days. Skills days are scheduled Sept. 12 and 19, October 3 and 24, and Nov. 7 and 21. On Skills Saturdays, the students will meet with Mercy instructors to learn the skills and critical thinking skills that are necessary to become a practicing EMT.
Individuals from several west central Iowa counties have indicated an interest in this class. Skills days will be held most likely in the Greene County area but a central location will be chosen depending upon where the students live.
The National Registry Skills Final will be held at Mercy in Des Moines on Dec. 12.
Students participating in this class will also complete clinical and field rotations with area hospitals and ambulance services.
Estimated cost of the class is $900 tuition for a class size of 12. Tuition could vary depending on class size. Textbook and workbooks are $180 (the e-book is about one-fourth of this price). Background checks are $90 and uniform shirts are $25.
Orientation for the course will be held online on Aug. 26 at 7 pm.
